Dusty Memories

My fingers traced the lampshade, down the porcelain side, and onto the dusty desk. I left a trail on the desk where I wiped the dust away. I couldn't believe how much dust had collected on something I used every single day. If I wasn't doing homework, I was drawing or writing in my diary. I paused, fingers hovering over the drawer. My diary... I wonder if it's even still in here.

Quickly I kneeled down at the height of the drawer and opened it. The wood stuck from being warped with age, but I got it out. I slipped my hand in the back of the drawer, praying there were no spiders making a home in it. I felt a little notch in the bottom of the drawer and I pushed on it, opening a compartment in the bottom. There it was, under a thick layer of dust. My old diary from grade school.

With a grin, I took it out and wiped the dust on my pants. I flipped it open to the front cover where I had written my name in a bunch of curly Q's and hearts around it. CASEY MORGAN in bold letters with a pink gel pen. I chuckled as I laid on my old bed. It had been stripped of the covers and pillows but it was still the best bed ever.

I turned the page and read the first entry.

Dear Diary,
Today I saw him. He walked into the classroom with his blonde hair and race car notebook. I knew he was the one the minute I saw him smile at me. My heart stopped and I forgot to breathe. I think I'm in love.

I laughed at how silly I sounded back then. I was so dramatic. I flipped a couple of pages and opened it to a couple weeks later.

Dear Diary,
His name is Derick Lovane. Doesn't it sound so beautiful? I can't believe he finally told me his name. We got paired up in English to write a report on Romeo and Juliet. ROMEO AND JULIET!!! I can't believe it! Maybe we'll get so inspired by the story that he'll want to reenact it!

I rolled my eyes, remembering that time having to write the paper. We fought constantly about what the story was really about. He insisted Romeo just wanted to fight anyone and he saw Juliet as a perfect excuse to kill her relative, but I was saying it was about the love they had for each other and their teenage defiance to go against their parents. Either way it ended up with us getting a D and no make out session. Total rip-off if you ask me. I went ahead and skipped to Halloween's entry, remembering the fun I had then.

Dear Diary,
I'm dressed like a hott demon. Cupid's got no chance against my devilish charm. I'm off to the school Halloween party. Wish me luck!
Oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god!!! He kissed me! He was Zorro and this soft song started to play so he asked me to dance and I said no thanks and I was leaning up against a wall and swaying to the music and he like placed his hands on both sides of my head and leaned it to kiss me! Wow! I'm just so...WOW!!! He's soooo hott! Uh oh mom's coming. Got to go!

I closed the book and rolled over onto my back. I remember when I first went on a date with Derick. He asked me out a week after Halloween. He took me to this amazing Mexican restaurant...better known as Taco Bell. But whatever, we were young with a small allowance and it was so romantic anyway. We became the It couple everyone knew about. We stayed together for a record breaking 3 months.

I laughed to myself, hugging the diary to my chest. I broke it off with him when I moved away. I didn't want to do a long distance relationship so I said it was over. I remember two years passed and my family moved back to this small town because they missed it. There he was, waiting for me as if I'd just gone to the store and back.

"Case? Are you up there?" I heard my husband call from the stairs. Derick walked in with a smile, hanging on the door frame. "Hey what are you doing up here? The whole family is downstairs." He caught sight of my diary and grinned. "Am I in there?"

I sat up and shut my book. "I don't know. I think I might have mentioned having the hots for this guy with a race car notebook and blonde hair." He leaned down and kissed me.

"You were the beautiful girl hiding behind curls and a book." I smiled against his lips, setting my diary down and wrapping my arms around his neck. "Come on, the family is gonna wonder where we are."

He pulled me off the bed and grinned slyly. "By the way, Romeo was so out to kill her cousin."

I groaned, nudging him in the side. "It was love at first sight and you know it!"
