Dusty Memories

My fingers traced the lampshade, down the porcelain side, and onto the dusty desk. I left a trail on the desk where I wiped the dust away. I couldn't believe how much dust had collected on something I used every single day. If I wasn't doing homework, I was drawing or writing in my diary. I paused, fingers hovering over the drawer. My diary... I wonder if it's even still in here.

Quickly I kneeled down at the height of the drawer and opened it. The wood stuck from being warped with age, but I got it out. I slipped my hand in the back of the drawer, praying there were no spiders making a home in it. I felt a little notch in the bottom of the drawer and I pushed on it, opening a compartment in the bottom. There it was, under a thick layer of dust. My old diary from grade school.

With a grin, I took it out and wiped the dust on my pants. I flipped it open to the front cover where I had written my name in a bunch of curly Q's and hearts around it. CASEY MORGAN in bold letters with a pink gel pen. I chuckled as I laid on my old bed. It had been stripped of the covers and pillows but it was still the best bed ever.

I turned the page and read the first entry.

October 18
Dear Diary,
Today I saw him. He walked into the classroom with his blonde hair and race car notebook. I knew he was the one the minute I saw him smile at me. My heart stopped and I forgot to breathe. I think I'm in love.

I laughed at how silly I sounded back then. I was so dramatic. I flipped a couple of pages and opened it to a couple weeks later.

October 25
Dear Diary,
His name is Derick Lovane. Doesn't it sound so beautiful? I can't believe he finally told me his name. We got paired up in English to write a report on Romeo and Juliet. ROMEO AND JULIET!!! I can't believe it! Maybe we'll get so inspired by the story that he'll want to reenact it!

I rolled my eyes, remembering that time having to write the paper. We fought constantly about what the story was really about. He insisted Romeo just wanted to fight anyone and he saw Juliet as a perfect excuse to kill her relative, but I was saying it was about the love they had for each other and their teenage defiance to go against their parents. Either way it ended up with us getting a D and no make out session. Total rip-off if you ask me. I went ahead and skipped to Halloween's entry, remembering the fun I had then.

October 31
Dear Diary,
I'm dressed like a hott demon. Cupid's got no chance against my devilish charm. I'm off to the school Halloween party. Wish me luck!
Oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god!!! He kissed me! He was Zorro and this soft song started to play so he asked me to dance and I said no thanks and I was leaning up against a wall and swaying to the music and he like placed his hands on both sides of my head and leaned it to kiss me! Wow! I'm just so...WOW!!! He's soooo hott! Uh oh mom's coming. Got to go!

I closed the book and rolled over onto my back. I remember when I first went on a date with Derick. He asked me out a week after Halloween. He took me to this amazing Mexican restaurant...better known as Taco Bell. But whatever, we were young with a small allowance and it was so romantic anyway. We became the It couple everyone knew about. We stayed together for a record breaking 3 months.

I laughed to myself, hugging the diary to my chest. I broke it off with him when I moved away. I didn't want to do a long distance relationship so I said it was over. I remember two years passed and my family moved back to this small town because they missed it. There he was, waiting for me as if I'd just gone to the store and back.

"Case? Are you up there?" I heard my husband call from the stairs. Derick walked in with a smile, hanging on the door frame. "Hey what are you doing up here? The whole family is downstairs." He caught sight of my diary and grinned. "Am I in there?"

I sat up and shut my book. "I don't know. I think I might have mentioned having the hots for this guy with a race car notebook and blonde hair." He leaned down and kissed me.

"You were the beautiful girl hiding behind curls and a book." I smiled against his lips, setting my diary down and wrapping my arms around his neck. "Come on, the family is gonna wonder where we are."

He pulled me off the bed and grinned slyly. "By the way, Romeo was so out to kill her cousin."

I groaned, nudging him in the side. "It was love at first sight and you know it!"

Snapple Apple 450 Week 21: Waiting for the Tide to Change

Title:
Waiting for the Tide to Change

Have you ever waited for something, knowing it would never come? Have you ever stared off into the distance just to stare? Have you ever wondered when everything will change and your life will never be the same? All you have to do is wait. Wait for time. Wait for love. Wait for luck. Wait for the rain to fall in a desert. Have you ever waited for anything?

I have.

I’ve waited my whole life for change. Waited my whole life for someone to come up to me and say ‘Claire, you’ve waited long enough.’ But no one has ever come for me. So here I stand on this empty beach...waiting.

Eight years ago, my dad went out on his brand new fishing boat with my older brother.

“What do you think of it, Claire?” My dad lifted me on his shoulders so I could see the boat better.
“It’s like a pirate ship!” I exclaimed with excitement.
“That’s right! Just like a pirate ship! I even have my black flag, but I’d better not hang it up or it will scare everyone away.” He whispered into my ear, winking secretively.
I winked back, putting my fingers to my lips to be quiet.

I was five years old when he got his fishing boat. He and I loved the ocean. He’d tell me bedtime stories of pirates and sea monsters and sailing. He promised to take me on an adventure one day when I was older. He gave me a little toy ship replica to remind me of all the fun we would have.

Here I was, years later, waiting for him to come home from his fishing trip. I was older now. Almost 14 years old. He promised that when I was a teenager, we’d go on a trip, just him and me. He promised me...so where was he?

I had overheard my mom talking to coast guards once. I’ll never forget that day I heard my mom just break down and cry for the first time in front of anyone. She was usually a very quiet, reserved person, but when they told her the news....

“Mrs. Moncrief?” The tall one said, taking his hat off in respect. Both their faces were solemn. My mom opened the door wider to let them in.
The short one spotted me peaking out from behind the kitchen. He coughed slightly, nodding towards me. “I’m not sure if she should be around to hear this, ma’am.”
She turned around and waved her hands, shooing me off. “Go play with your toys, Claire. Everything is alright.” Her wavering smile told me just the opposite, but I left the room to hide better.
“Mrs. Moncrief, we sent our men out in search for your husbands boat and we haven’t found anything yet. After that large storm out there.... It would be a shock to all of us if he survived in his small boat. Fishing boats that size aren’t built to weather storms. I’m terribly sorry, ma’am, but we have to give up the search.”
My mom collapsed into the chair. “What am I supposed to tell his daughter?”

From then on, my mom had referred to me as “his daughter”. She dis-attached herself from me completely. I became a stranger to my own mother just as she became a stranger to me. She started a drinking habit and to get away from her, I’d come down to the ocean and wait.

Here I sat, day after day, year after year. My once new toy boat was now brown and decomposing from continual use and aging. I’d hold onto it as I watched the horizon. It was the last thing I had from my dad before he disappeared.

Everyone thought he and my brother were dead, but I knew the truth. My dad told me the boat had magical powers. It would never sink no matter how many pirates tried to blast holes in it or how many storms came. I bet my dad was out sailing the seven seas with his black flag raised high and just trying to find his way home to me and mama. The storm must have blown his map into the ocean and he got lost.

I would wait here until the day he comes home. He made me promise to wait for him so wait I will. Even if I’m middle-aged and my boat is all but a plank of rotting wood, I’ll wait for him to come home. Wait for him to tell me I’ve waited long enough. Until then, I’ll sit here and wait.

Title:
Love Sick

I sat on the beach, arms wrapped around legs staring out at the sea and the couple being all 'lovey dovey'. I rolled my eyes at the scene and wondered why two people would have a private moment in such a public location.

They hugged and kissed and ran around on the beach like some love sick teenagers. I scoffed and turned my head around so that I was staring at the sea. I love the way the sea moves, the sound it makes, the smell of it. Its calming, and just enjoyable to watch without having to be out in it and getting all cold so that you want to run away from it and warm up.

I was starting to relax a lot and started to enjoy myself when the love sick teenagers ruined it again. They ran out into the water and started squealing at how cold it was. I rolled my eyes at their pathetic movements and noise.

In the end I got fed up of them, so I got up, picked up my things and sulked over to the other side of the beach. I enjoyed the rest of my time on the beach, but that all came crashing down on me when it was time to go home.

The love sick teenagers, let's just say I sat next to them in the car. My sister and her boyfriend, the guy I had a crush on for years and my sister knew it. I hated it, and hated them.

Title:
Quality Time

Gary accosted me as soon as I came in the door. “How was your weekend? I tried to call.”

Busybody, I thought, wishing he would back off. “Good. I went fishing,” I said with a grin.

“You don’t fish,” Gary said sceptically, narrowing his eyes. “Who fishes?” He tapped his chin trying to figure it out. “Hey, Beth!” he called over the cube walls.

“Would you shut up!” I hissed at him, grabbing his thick arm and not quite getting my fingers around. Gary had been a linebacker. He was pudgy now, but still big everywhere.

He didn’t even seem to notice me. He waved to Beth who had rolled her chair out to look down the row of cubicles.

She wasn’t alone of course. Half the desks in the row were now looking our way. I rolled my eyes, leaving Gary standing there and heading to my office.

I closed the door, sighing loudly, and put my head on my desk for a moment.

I had spent all of Sunday thinking about Saturday. I’d called Beth and talked to her on the phone for an hour. My own grandmother couldn’t keep me on the phone that long. She’d gotten me talking about music, art, movies, all things I hadn’t really thought about in years. They’d seemed so frivolous. Yet hearing her talk about the band she’d caught with Jamie, especially having her sing to me, well, it was easy to get interested. I remembered how much I had enjoyed going out with my friends and catching a game, hitting the pub after. I told her about the plays we’d done in high school. I hadn’t thought about acting since... since Sarah.

I heard the door open and lifted my head quickly, picking up the first piece of paper on my desk. It was a memo for the blood drive. I groaned and tossed it, looking to see who had come in without knocking, Gary or Mary...

It was Mary. She looked at the paper floating across my desk.

“Oh, good. You got it then. We’re doing this,” she said emphatically. “I’ve already gotten most of the department signed up. You are the last hold out, really.”

I grimaced. Needles were terrible things, almost as bad as the blood that came from them. “Yes, well, I’m unavailable today.”

Mary narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms. “Fine. You look healthy enough to me, so let’s hear the excuse.”

“Meeting,” I said quickly.

“With?” she asked, calling my bluff.

I ground my teeth.

Beth’s head appeared behind and over Mary’s. Mary was a little thing, not many inches over five feet. Beth was significantly taller, her chin well over Mary’s head.

“Leave him be, Mary. He isn’t the only one who isn’t comfortable with needles and blood. I’ll give extra,” she said with an impish grin.

Mary’s hard expression slipped a little. “You know you can’t do that.”

“Yeah,” Beth rolled her eyes. “Come on, I need you to check this sheet for me, make sure I’ve got it right.” She snagged Mary’s arm, spinning her out of my doorway.

“Thank you,” I mouthed to her as she left. She smiled at me in return.

On a roll when lunch came, I didn’t leave the office. There was a knock this time before the door opened. Beth closed it behind her.

“Hi,” she said tentatively.

“Hello,” I said, feeling my cheeks tighten with the broadness of my smile. I dropped it a little, thinking I was going to scare the poor girl off. “Are you joining me?” I asked hopefully, sweeping a hand to take in my lunch.

“No, I’m here to invite you to the blood drive again. You know the company is using this as an entry in the corporate challenge, right? The more blood we donate, the worse we make those fools over at Demo look.” She got a wicked glint in her eye as she said the name of our rival.

“I never knew you were competitive. I thought we put all of that type in sales,” I added with a smirk.

She laughed, tipping her head back slightly. “I never had any siblings to compete with, so I had to pack it all into the summers with Jamie and her brothers. It’s been too long. I need someone to beat.” Her lips pulled up in an almost frightening smile that showed all of her teeth. Did I look like that a moment ago? She looked like she was going to beat me. That thought hovered for a while: me bent over the bed while she raised and lowered her hand.

I shook myself, feeling the blood rushing to my face and groin. Her smile slipped a little, her eyes widening. She couldn’t know what I’d been thinking; that wasn’t possible. Regardless of what she knew or thought, an awkward silence filled the room. I took a bite of my leftover pasta. That seemed to do the trick; Beth visibly relaxed.

“I’m not going with the others,” she said, smiling more naturally.

“Hmmm?” I asked, my mouth full of food.

“If you weren’t comfortable, going with Gary and Mary and... everyone. I’m going after work today, by myself.” She stepped closer and put a hand over mine. “Sometimes it’s easier without the audience.”

I looked up at her, meeting her warm eyes, her smile widening slightly as she looked down at our hands. I lifted mine, taking hers, to my lips, kissing her hand.

“I appreciate that. I will try. You were right. I’m not comfortable with needles - or doctors - at all,” I admitted, sitting back with a sigh. I didn’t want to talk about this at all, but definitely not here and now.

“I understand.” She straightened and turned back for the door. “I’ll be waiting after work. Just stop by my cube. I rode with Mary today, if you don’t mind giving me a lift?” Her smile was coy, as though she was afraid I’d say no.

“Of course,” I agreed. The thought of her in my car again was very appealing. I’d had to keep my hands to myself while she drove. I could trust myself a little further, after all it was my car. I could let my hand trace her thigh, brush her hair off her shoulder, touch her neck.

This was not helping the blood flow already throbbing in my pants and I closed my eyes to try to get myself back in check.

“Thank you,” she said with a last smile, pulling the door shut.

I tapped my head on the desk again, my hand falling to my lap. With a quick look to the clock, I headed to the washroom, needing... something. I closed the door to the stall and locked it. My mind explored the images it had just conjured, starting with Beth in my car - her hair dark on the creamy white seats, her knees slightly spread. I imagined how pale the inside of her thigh would be, how soft to my touch. Her breasts were next, as I imagined rolling over her on the seat, pushing blouse and bra aside.

“Who’s heavy breathing in here?” Gary asked cheerfully. Dammit. I let go of myself, knowing he’d never let me finish. My mind still raced with images of Beth spread out before me. I hadn’t had time to indulge the images of her using her hand on me, especially not to beat me.

My teeth ground as I throbbed again, and I forgot Gary. My hand wrapped around myself, the other gripping my knee as I bent over the toilet, pumping for all I was worth while imagining Beth in a tight corset with her breasts free over the top, that predatory smile prominent as her hand connected with my cheeks.

With a grunting groan, I released the tension that had built in me, letting it spill into the toilet. I held my breath, listening. No sound. I zipped up and poked my head out of the stall.

“I knew it!” Gary crowed.

“Fuck off,” I replied, washing my hands.

“It’s Beth, right? Right? Come on, tell me. You guys are hooking up, right?”

I ground my teeth, drying my hands. “We have gone on a couple of dates,” I said tersely.
“Fishing is a date now?”

I scowled, but didn’t answer.

“Wait, you don’t fish. She asked you to go fishing? Then it totally counts!” Gary proceeded to lay out his dating logic as we walked back to the office. Apparently it was also a date if she asked me to a sporting event, because it was out of her milieu. I didn’t argue. I didn’t care if it was a date or not. Any time I spent with Beth was quality time, time well spent.

“Buddy, you’re not going to lose that any time soon,” Gary taunted, nudging my hip with his own. Sure enough, even idle thoughts had me stiffening again. “Let’s hit the gym,” he suggested, referring to the one in the basement of the building. “We’ve submitted the quarter; nothing’s urgent, right? Burn off some steam.”

It sounded like a great idea, and Gary would make sure I was sweating hard. We entered the elevator together. As I’d expected, Gary started me on the lifting equipment, working me around the room. As soon as I hit the elliptical though, he split. I ached nicely, but still felt edgy. After an hour of running, I admitted to myself that this wasn’t what I needed. In the locker room shower, I took the time I hadn’t at lunch. Under the warm water, I gave my imagination freedom.

Beth shakes her head, tisking quietly. The riding crop bounces against her palm as she steps closer in her knee-high heeled boots. They are practically all she wears. Her breasts bounce slightly with each step, the dark nipples showing their movement. Her bright red lips pull back from her white teeth. The smell of leather fills my nose as the crop comes under my chin.

“Now, you will show me what you can do. If I am pleased, I won’t have to use this.” The tip of the crop flicks lightly on my buttocks as I kneel. I lean forward, away from it, into her.
My nose touches her skin and it is impossible to miss her meaning. My hands reach around behind her.

Crying out, the crop snaps against my skin, my hands reach behind me. I hear metal clink and see cuffs on my hands now.

“I know how you use those. I want to see what else you can do.” She grips my hair, pulling my head back and stepping forward, over me. The intention is to force me to pleasure her, but this is hardly an imposition. My tongue eagerly flicks out, happy to taste her. I watch the skin spread, listen to her breath catch, feel the moisture collecting, sliding out, as my tongue finds all her secret and sensitive places. Her smell is all that fills my nose now, my face buried in her as she grinds on me.

“Mmmm, yes. That’s it. Right there.” She gasps, and I work to hit the same spot again and again.
“Yes, good boy,” she manages to utter as she squeezes my tongue in her, washing it in her juices.

With a groan I sprayed the tiles and took a deep breath. Shit. I didn’t know I was into BDSM. Did I even know anything about BDSM? I couldn’t think of anything past a few pictures in the nudie mags Dad had left behind. I’d never really needed much more than my own imagination and the odd ambitious girlfriend. None had suggested anything like what I’d just imagined. One had wanted me to cuff her to the bed, but that was as far as it went. Where had this fantasy come from? Just that smile? Her turn of phrase?

Drying off slowly, taking time to restyle my hair, I didn’t notice the time until I was on my way back to the elevator. It was past six.

“Oh fuck,” I muttered as I whipped out my phone, looking up Beth’s number. There was a missed message.

i gave up on you -B

I couldn’t blame her. According to the time stamp, she had waited a good hour past the end of the work day for me. I held my head, feeling sick, as I wandered to the garage, descending one flight of stairs. The drive to the blood bank was short. I ran through the doors, hoping she was still here, that I wasn’t so late as to have forced her to bus or walk home.

The receptionist looked up, but didn’t stop me as I walked quickly past her desk toward the chairs where the donors lounged. Beth lay on one, reading one of the medical fliers that abounded in this place. A red tube trailed down her arm into a bulging sac. I felt myself pale.
The nurse that had been at her side was suddenly at mine. “Got a fainter,” she said loudly. That solved the pallor problem nicely. I was now flushed.

“Peter!” Beth called, sitting forward on her lounge.

“Lie back,” the heavy-set nurse ordered. Her matronly glare had the intended effect, Beth flopped back. “And you,” she said to me, “need to go through the screening.” She pointed to where people were seated with clipboards. Hanging my head, I followed her directions.

The questionnaire seemed more formality that anything, but I felt my ears burn as the nurse interrogated me on my sex life and travel history. Finally she deemed that I was both healthy enough, and clean enough, to donate blood.

“Right or left?” she asked brusquely, leading me to the lounges.

“Um, right?” it had been too long since I’d done this, I’d forgotten what she was asking.

“Left,” Beth said from beside me. I turned to her. “You want to be able to use your right,” she said, smiling at me.

“Right,” I agreed. “I mean, left,” I told the nurse with a grin. She rolled her eyes, obviously hearing the same several times a day.

Following her, I climbed on the lounge she indicated. “Allergic to iodine?” she asked, pulling out a small plastic cylinder.

“No,” I replied. There was a quiet snap and she started painting a yellow circle on the inside of my elbow. I was fine as she tightened a blood pressure cuff and found a vein. I was fine when she clamped the tube. I wasn’t fine when the nurse pulled the needle from it’s plastic casing.
Turning away, I found easy distraction. Beth stood at my side, smiling at me. She reached out and took my hand, allowing me to see the bandage tied to hers. I squeezed her hand and winced, my stomach sinking at the feeling of the metal biting into my skin.

Her smile never wavered. She didn’t look at me condescendingly - as I was used to in this position - or with pity, she just smiled, happy. I let go of her hand to pass my fingers through her hair. It was as silky as it appeared, satiny. My eyes searched her face, but still her expression didn’t change.

I started to worry. Was I imaging what I wanted? Was the desire all mine? Had I imagined the heat in her kiss on Saturday?

“It’s alright, Peter. I’m going to stay with you.” She mistook my concern over her feelings as anxiety. I was actually doing better than the last time I had donated blood. “You still owe me a ride home,” she reminded me with a smirk.

I let my arm fall, circling her waist, pulling her closer to me. “I’m looking forward to it,” I said lustily, regretting the tone until I felt a shiver under my hand.

I knew I hadn’t imagined it. Even now her eyes were closed and her lips slightly parted. Her head tipped back very slightly. I longed to be free of the tube and needle so I could put my lips and nose to that neck, to run my tongue down the white column, over her collar bone...

A sudden beeping brought me out of my daydreaming. Beth shook herself at the same time. “That means you’re done,” she said with a smile, taking my hand again.

The nurse ordered me to hold a cotton ball to my arm, pulling the pieces of masking tape that kept the warm tube on my arm. I didn’t take my eyes from Beth, who spent the time completing her tales of Jamie and Mary, the trouble they got into together. I barely noticed the odd sensation when the nurse pulled the needle out, I was so focused on Beth and her words. She didn’t stop talking until another series of beeps interrupted. These were from a timer.

The nurse returned, taking the cotton from my fingers and telling me to bend my arm. She taped the swap down with another bandage.

“You are free to go. Just take it easy for the next hour. No heavy lifting with that arm for the rest of the day and be sure to drink lots of fluids. If you smoke, wait an hour.”

Beth lead me away from the donation area to one filled with refreshments, encouraging me to drink. I grabbed a glass of juice thankfully, draining it quickly.

“Are you hungry?” I asked. “It’s so late, I could buy you dinner.” I noticed it was now well past seven, heading to eight.

“That would be nice,” she said with a smile. “Casa Rosa?” she suggested with a smile, gesturing to her casual outfit.

“How about the Burger Barn?” I said with a smile.

“Classy,” she answered with a laugh. “And a great idea.” She took my hand, turning for the door. “You’re okay to drive?” she asked with worry on her face.

“Looking for an excuse to steal my car already?” I teased.

She giggled. “No, just that donating can wipe you out. I’ve had longer to recover.” Once outside she looked up at the crescent moon with a smile.

Unable to resist, I kissed her cheek while it was turned up. I felt her eyelashes on my nose as she closed her eyes. My heart seemed to leap at the tiny flutter, jumping out of my chest. I pulled back suddenly.

“Peter?” she asked.

Hitting the button to unlock the doors, I reluctantly let go of her hand. “Yes?” I answered, opening her door for her.

“Thank you for coming,” she said with a smile. “I know it wasn’t easy for you. We all appreciate it.” She kissed me then, a quick peck, before sitting down in the car.

Frozen for a second, I had the feeling that wasn’t what she was going to say. I circled the car and took my place beside her.

“Beth?” My voice shook a little.

She turned to look at me, her eyes large. “Yes?”

“What did you really want to ask me?”

She sighed and sat back in her seat, pulling on her seatbelt. I mimicked her, skipping the sigh, then resting my hand on her knee.

“What happened at lunch?” she asked finally. “I mean, I know I get competitive sometimes, but I didn’t expect that to bother you. Does it?” She looked at me with her brow furrowed.

I closed my eyes and pulled my lips together tight. How in the hell was I going to get out of this? “No, it doesn’t bother me,” I began, safe enough, and true.

“Then... what?”

I knew I wasn’t going to get off that easily. “I... You have a very interesting... game face,” I finished, finally finding a good expression.

“Oh.” She thought about this while I started the car and backed out of the stall. “Is it good or bad?”

I switched gears and rolled onto the street before answering her. “I liked it.”

She smiled, satisfied, and I sighed in relief. My hand moved from the stick shift to her knee. I had to lift it several times as I wound through streets, so I was able to touch different places, her hand, the outside of her thigh. At one red light, I did push her hair back to touch the back of her neck.

She shivered a little and looked at me. “Is this a date?” she asked.

My mind went over Gary’s criteria for a date, but finally I came back to my own definitions. “It’s quality time.”

She smiled and leaned into my shoulder. “I like spending quality time with you.” She reached one arm across herself to squeeze my leg before the light changed. She pulled it back and sat up as I grabbed the shift to get into second. Stupid manual transmission, I thought.

RomanticVamp Week 21: The Dress

The Dress

A/N: I know this might be a bit early, but I love Halloween and I just couldn’t resist!

“Bella! Halloween’s tomorrow!!”

I glance up from my cereal at my brother Emmett. He’s all smiles and bouncing energy as he looks at me across the table. I roll my eyes and put my head back in my hand, staring down at my breakfast.

“Aw, come on, Bells,” he whines.

“Exciting,” I mutter.

I can practically hear his pout.

“So you’re really not going to go tomorrow night?”

“Nope,” I say, popping the “p.”

He keeps pouting, but is too busy shoving food into his mouth to verbally complain.

I’ve never liked Halloween. When I was little, maybe I did, but as I hit middle school and high school, I came to loathe the holiday. The girls who actually bothered to dress up used it as an excuse to show off every inch of skin they could manage. It was the holiday that made being a skank in public acceptable. Then there was me, who just wanted to dress up as whatever I fancied. I loved going all out, making my costume as authentic as possible. I quickly learned it was the way to get laughed at and gave those skanks opportunity to cut you down.

I hate Halloween. Without a doubt.

Not to mention, at my age, Halloween parties require you have a significant other or date to show up with. As I have neither, there is absolutely no way I am going to the big Halloween Bash, no matter how much Emmett begs. He has Rosalie. Alice and Jasper have each other. It leaves me as the awkward and unneeded fifth wheel.

I go through my Friday like any normal day. I work, socialize, and then head out in the evening. As I walk home, I watch all the frantic mothers with their kids, looking for last minute costumes or accessories, and trying to find those bags of bite-sized candy in whatever stores still have them. Every store front has displays of ghosts and mummies and vampires and jack-o-lanterns and spooky lights. I tuck my coat tighter around me and hurry home.

Everyone is over, putting the finishing touches on their costumes. Rosalie actually has her sexy police woman uniform on, debating with Alice on if they should cut more fabric off. She’s dangling a real set of handcuffs from her fingers and I wonder briefly if I should beg her and Emmett to go back to her place tomorrow night after the party.

Jasper and Emmett are comparing their costumes further away from the girls. Emmett is holding up the ridiculous black and white striped jumpsuit that declares him an escaped convict. He has the black ski mask on right now as he argues with Jasper. The subject of their argument is whether or not Jasper should wear a shirt under his cowboy vest.

Alice and Rosalie have moved on to Alice’s costume. They’re debating how high on her stomach Alice should tie her button up and how low on her hips she should wear the gun holster. I shake my head. Sexy cowgirl indeed.

As I pass by, they all try to convince me to go with them for the millionth time. I refuse, stating I don’t have a costume, that I don’t have a date, that I have to be here to hand out candy. When none of those work, I thank them for inviting me and lock myself in my room. I curl up in bed, trying to get extra sleep since I have a feeling I won’t be getting any tomorrow night when Emmett and Rosalie get back.

****

Emmett is already awake when I make my way into the kitchen in the morning. He’s cooking too. He directs me to the table and tells me to sit so he can bring me my eggs. I shrug and do as he says. It’s not often he decides to cook. I may as well enjoy it.

Except when he puts the plate down in front of me, I stare at it for a moment before looking up at him incredulously.

“Seriously?”

He grins. “I thought I’d try to get you in the mood.”

I look back down at my breakfast. He has formed the egg whites into the shape of a ghost, complete with frowny open mouth and a hand. The yolks make up the eyeballs. It’s quite impressive really.

It still isn’t convincing me to go to the Halloween ball with them.

I almost don’t have the heart to destroy his work, but I do eat the eggs and go to run the normal household errands. As I start on my way home, something catches my eye.

Sitting in the window of a vintage boutique is the most gorgeous dress I have laid eyes on. It’s delicate and white and looks like it came straight out of a Victorian masquerade ball. The torso is tight, with cap sleeves that sit off the shoulder, and a full beaded skirt. I can’t help it. I want it.

I hurry inside and inquire about it. The elderly lady is all too happy to help me, especially since they’re having a Halloween sale. I don’t even hesitate when she asks me if I want to purchase it. I thank her profusely and hurry home.

Thankfully, Emmett isn’t home when I get there. I put the groceries away and then lay the dress out on my bed, staring admiringly at it. I want a reason to wear it, to show it off. I blush as I realize what I’m thinking of.

I hesitate, but grab my phone. ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ will have to wait for tomorrow night.

“Bella?”

“Alice, I need your help.”

****

I step into the huge hall behind my cowgirl best friend, glancing around at the orange and black lights. The music is blasting and the room is crowded with people. I pick up the flowing skirt and follow her to the rest of our group.

Obviously, Alice didn’t say a word why she would be late when she called them. They all gape when they see me.

“Bella, I thought you weren’t coming!” Emmett accuses from behind his ski-masked face.

Jasper pulls Alice under his arm, smiling appreciatively at me.

“You look beautiful,” Rosalie says, shooting Emmett a glare from under her police hat.

I blush and thank her. Alice was indeed a miracle worker. Without much explanation, she showed up and transformed me. She curled and pinned my hair so that it drapes down my exposed shoulders and helped apply makeup. She even brought a white mask trimmed with gold and peacock feathers on one side. It’s tied so the ribbon weaves through my hair as an added decoration and holds the mask in place over my nose and eyes.

We begin to mingle and enjoy the festivities. The dress makes me feel almost magical, like anything can happen. I notice more than one curious male glance in my direction.

As the night wears on and my friends consume more and more alcohol, I begin to really feel the effects of not having a date. They start to disperse with each other and I’m left on my own. I sigh and suddenly feel like Cinderella. It’s getting later and the magic is beginning to wear off.

I seek out a quiet room where I can get some air and pull myself back together. The room I find is spectacular. It’s an old ballroom, decorated intricately. The lights are muted and the floor is covered in black balloons. I move through them, swirling my skirt as I try to compose myself.

Except, as I move further into the space, I realize I’ve interrupted someone else’s alone time. He turns to look at me.

“I’m sorry!” I quickly apologize. “I didn’t realize anyone was in here.”

I start to back away when he moves toward me and smiles.

“It’s quite alright. Don’t rush off. I’m sure there’s enough room here for both of us.”

I offer a shy smile and really look at him. He’s dressed in a tuxedo and long black cape. I don’t quite understand his costume until I see the half white mask across one side of his face. The Phantom of the Opera. As he moves closer to me, my breath catches when I realize how gorgeous and perfect one half of his face really is. His bronze hair is wild, quite un-Phantom like I note with a grin, and his emerald eyes are piercing.

“I’m Edward. You?”

“Bella.”

“Well, Bella, care to tell me a little about yourself?”

I’m not sure what it is that sets me at ease with this stranger, but we fall into easy conversation. We exchange information about ourselves briefly, sticking to less personal facts, before discussing anything and everything that we can think of. His laugh and smile are contagious and the air around us hums with some sort of unseen force. I’m drawn to him.

Some time later, though it feels like none has passed, he stands from the chairs we’ve found and offers his hand as the music changes in the other room.

“Would you care to dance?”

I blush and try to stammer an excuse, but he won’t hear it. He pulls me to my feet and leads me through the balloons. Somehow, he leads me with grace and I find I can move easily with him. As the song changes, he pulls me closer to his body and we settle for gentle swaying instead of the sweeping waltz we’ve just been doing.

“I’d like to see you again, Bell, if that’s alright,” he murmurs in my ear.

I smile against his shoulder. “I think I’d like that.”

He simply pulls me closer and moves with me to the music. I can’t help but feel grateful and happy that I came tonight.

Maybe, just maybe, I like Halloween after all.

Title:
The New Boss

I came back from a meeting and there they were sitting at my desk taking up all the space where my computer should have been.

“What the hell is going on here?” I demanded. I looked around and everyone’s eyes shot down into their cubicles. My eyes narrowed as I glanced around searching for the prankster. Everyone knew I turned Lauren Conrad down with her manuscript and it was one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made.

“I was merely showing you what should never happen again.”

I turned to face the voice and my vulgar remark got stuck in my throat. Who made such a beautiful face? I looked up at him in awe. His baby blues were the brightest blue I’ve seen in ages. His dark blonde hair just waiting for my fingers to run through them. Oh damn! His body was even better! Under that tailored suit was strong muscles. I would bet money on that.

He cleared his throat and I had to shake my head to clear my fantasy of us in the utility closet. “Who are you exactly?” Good job, find out who he is so you can stalk him later.

“I’m your new boss.” New boss? Since when did Bob get fired? Oh wait I forgot about those fifteen sexual harassment charges. Guess he finally quit or got fired. Whatever the male counterpart of Aphrodite was in front of her.

“Why did you think this was necessary? To humiliate me in front of my colleagues? What would that prove?”
He opened the cover and pointed to the inside cover where the publishers name was. “To insure that never happens again.” He closed the book and walked away. Damn him for embarrassing me then being more attractive than all my boyfriends combined.

I sank into my chair and stared at the wall of paper in front of me. What to do with all these stupid ass books. They weren’t even that good. I huffed and called my assistant to clear off my desk while I took my lunch break.

I walked to the elevator and pressed the button while rummaging through my purse for a piece of gum. To minutes go by and still no elevator or gum. Frustrated I head to the stairs. Its only fifteen flights in high heels.

My heels clicking against the floor was the only sound until a door slammed open and I heard someone running toward me. Now I’m not stupid I tried to get out of the guys way but in his haste knocked his shoulder into mine and sent me falling down the last few steps.

I moaned in pain as looked down at my ankle. It was already swollen and changing colors. My favorite color is purple but not on my ankle. Gah, stupid person! I heard someone running to see what happened.

“Are you okay?”

My eyes widened. I was my new boss but he was in a different suit. I looked up at him and he was looking at my ankle then to my spilled purse. Overall it was a bad mess. “Here let me help you up.” He put out his hand and I couldn’t resist putting mine in it.

He lifted me up but when I tried to put weight on my foot a sound of pain fell from my lips and I fell into his chest not able to hold myself up. “I should take you to the hospital.” His voice was gruff like he was the one in pain.

“No its okay I’m sure I can make it without seeing a doctor.” His eyes looked right passed me and into my soul. “I’m taking you to the hospital.” It wasn’t a question. I quivered inside with passion. No man ever spoke to me like that. And I must say I liked the authority in his voice.

He lifted me up and walked out of the lobby and to say everyone was staring was an understatement. My cheeks heated and I hid my face in my bosses chest. A soft musk was all over him and it smelled so good too I couldn’t stop inhaling. Of course I could blame that on the pain in my ankle.

He walked with me in his arms until we reached his car. “It won’t take long I’m sure.” He placed me in the car with so much care it made my heart swell. “Um, thank you.” He just nodded and he had a small crooked smile. “I like saving damsels in distress.”

I let that one go. Not now or ever have I been a damsel in distress. “I was just kidding,” he laughed. “I’ve heard a lot about you. And I must say they didn’t say anything about you being beautiful.” She chuckled, “so you brought me to the hospital to seduce me?” Please say yes. Please say yes.

“Sadly no. But I might after you get that ankle looked at.” I sighed. I hated going to doctors but I’d endure it for this sexy man.

We finally made it to the hospital and he carried me inside as well. The doctor saw me pretty quickly and I was in and out of the hospital in about an hour. When I came out of the lobby with my crutches my boss smiled at me. “Those look good on you.” I rolled my eyes, “yeah yeah. You really suck at seducing.”

“Oh I haven’t even started seducing you.” His eyes sparkled with promise.

He stood up and I noticed again that he had a different suit on. “Why did you change your suit?” He looked confused and looked down to look at his suit. “What do you mean? I’ve had this one on all day.” She thought back and she could have sworn he was wearing a dark burgundy suit, but now he was wearing a black one.

“No you were wearing a different one when you humiliated me in front of everyone upstairs. Or don’t you remember.” His eyes narrowed. “My brother humiliated you? I’m going to have to talk to him.” Whoa. What a
minute and rewind.

“What are you talking about? You’re my new boss. You’re the one who did it.”

“No. That was my brother. We are twins if you didn’t notice before.”

Oooooh. Now that made sense. “Let go before he thinks I stole you away.” His carefree way was back, but I could tell he was going to have words with his brother. And that shouldn’t put butterflies in her stomach, but damn it to hell, it did.

He drove her back to the building and helped her into the elevator. “Can I ask your name?” I blurted. He smiled and held out his hand.

“I’m Dominick. Pleased to meet you.” We shook hands and he brought me close to his chest. I could feel his cool breath on my cheeks. “I’d love to see you tonight for dinner.”

The butterflies went into overdrive. “I’d love that.” I smiled and he leaned down and I felt his soft lips meet mine. I moaned his lips so soft and delicious.

The bell dinged and he lifted his head. “Seems like we are here.” I blushed and repositioned myself on the crutches. “See you at 8.” He smiled and walked toward his brother's office.

Title:
Watermelon

“Babe, come on!” Richard yelled from the living room.

Kayla came out of the kitchen carrying a large picnic basket and a grin. “I packed it so full, we need to restock the fridge.”

He smiled back, taking the heavy basket from her. “This will be great. I’m glad you thought of it.”

She grabbed an old quilt and laid it on top of the basket before heading out. Richard placed the basket in the hood of his Volkswagen and they drove off.

“So you say you have the---”

Richard cut her off, “---perfect place. Yes I do.”

Kayla smiled to herself as she stared out the window at the passing trees. They were on their way to have a picnic. They decided they haven’t been on one since childhood so why not now? Summer was almost over anyway and they’d be going off to college soon.

Richard suddenly pulled over behind some trees, close to Mr. Finch’s farm. “What are we doing here?” Kayla asked.

He gave her a devilish grin and winked. “We need a watermelon for our picnic.” And with that he slipped out of the car and into the trees.

“Richard wait!” Kayla half whispered and yelled. She scrambled after him, trying to be quiet. She was watching her feet so she wouldn’t trip, but ran smack into Richard’s back. He turned and caught her before she could fall and put his finger to his lips telling her to be quiet.

“I’m gonna go get a watermelon. You wait by the car.”

“No Richa---” He was off again before she could stop him. She grumbled to herself knowing he couldn’t be stopped.

Richard had run straight for Mr. Finch’s watermelon patch. He brought a pocketknife with him to cut the stem. Once he got there, he found the best watermelon he could find and began sawing away at the thick stem.

“You know you could just ask?” He heard a voice from behind him.

He jumped and fell backwards over the watermelons. Mr. Finch was standing there with a big straw hat on and a crinkly-eyed smile. He held a hand out for Richard to take and helped pull him up to his feet.

Richard was a little stunned into silence at Mr. Finch’s niceness. Finally he shook his head, clearing his thoughts. “Uh ...look I’m sorry, sir. It’s just my girlfriend and I are on our way to a picnic. We’re going off to separate colleges next week and I wanted a watermelon for it. She loves watermelons and I knew you grew them. I’m really sorry for trying to steal one.”

Mr. Finch chuckled. “Quit your babbling. You’re only sorry for getting caught.”

Richard couldn’t really deny it, he just waited for his punishment.

The old man scratched his chin in thought. “You’re McKinney's kid, aren’t you?”

Richard nodded his head. “Yes sir, Richard McKinney Jr.” He didn’t know why he was giving him his name. He’d probably turn him into the cops.

Mr. Finch continued to think. “Well...I don’t want to keep you and your girlfriend waiting. Let Mrs. Finch cut up the watermelon for you so it’s easier. Not sure what you were planning on doing with a watermelon and a pocketknife. Damn near impossible, if you ask me.”

Richard was shocked at what he just heard. “You’re not gonna call the cops?!”

Mr. Finch knelled down with his cutters and cut the watermelon free. He then paused and looked up at the boy. “Why, were you wanting me to?” He laughed.

Richard shook his head. “No sir but---”

Mr.Finch cut him off mid-sentence. “Son, I was a kid once too. I’ve done a lot worse than stealing watermelons and I’m sure you have as well. There’s no lesson to learn here, no punishment, no scary old cranky man with a shotgun. Let me get this cut up for you so you can go on your way.”

Richard didn’t know what to say so he just smiled at him. “Thank you.”

A few minutes later, Kayla was pacing by the car nervous as hell wondering what was taking him so long. She didn’t know if she should go after him or wait by the car. Suddenly Richard came out of the bushes carrying another small basket, filled with freshly cut watermelon.

Kayla gave him a questioning look but was glad he was alright. “I thought you were getting a whole watermelon. Where did you get the basket?”

Richard just smiled to himself. “Don’t worry about it.” He started the car and drove past the farm, waving to the old couple on the porch. Kayla gave him a silent look filled with questions but she didn’t speak any of them. She knew how Richard had his ways of making things work out for him.

Finally they got to the field Richard had picked out. The sun was a few hours from setting. They laid the blanket out and opened the baskets, spreading all the food. Kayla went to sit down but Richard grabbed her by the elbow and pulled her close to him.

A simple smile filled his face as he stared down at her. “I love you.”

She smiled so big, a content sigh escaped her lips as she kissed him. “Come on, let’s eat!” He pulled her down, making her fall into his lap as they each took a bite of the delicious watermelon.
