Title:
Wait's End

My phone rang with a new message just as I was snapping a photo. I didn't move, not wanting to disturb the butterfly that would be featured in my article on Butterfly Gardens. The blooms this spring were fantastic, and I had visited several of my favorite gardeners to get the right picture.

After three closes of the camera's shutter, the butterfly lit from the honeysuckle, flapping its yellow and black wings. I lifted my camera and laughed as I snapped a photo of Mrs. Larson taking a photo of me.

"You'll have to include this one for your by-line," Mrs. Larson teased, turning her camera to show me the display.

"I will! Email it to me?" I asked. Mrs. Mary Larson was the most technologically advanced seventy year-old I had ever met. Of course none of that newfangled nonsense was used in her garden. Just old fashioned coffee grounds and egg shells, thank you very much.

I pulled out my phone, checking the message.

5 days

My grin tipped off Mrs. Larson. "What does your boy say?"

"He wants to marry me," I said with a smile.

"Congratulations!" Mrs. Larson hugged me. "Where's your ring?" Mrs. Larson asked tersely, grabbing my hand.

I laughed and pulled up the picture on my phone. "He has it with him. He's coming home in five days," I said with a sigh.

"Lovely. Well, hopefully he get's home sooner."

"Thanks again for letting me visit." I headed for the gate just as my phone rang with another message.

Weather sucks. I'm wet through my skin. And not in the good way.

I snorted.

Gorgeous here. Don't know what your problem is.

Haha. I'd be in a better mood if it wasn't slowing us down.

You'll be late?

No. I'm coming in 5 days. Promise.

Three days later the weather matched my mood. It was overcast and raining. I walked downtown, alone, stopping in at various garden and magazine shops to make sure they were carrying The Quinessential Gardener. I was also seaching for my next topic. I held my black umbrella tightly, keeping the rain off my sweaterdress. I hadn't warn a coat; it was warm, just wet.

My umbrella was suddenly ripped from my grip. It wasn't windy, what was happening?

I turned and nearly fainted.

"Wesley?!"

He held my umbrella high, off to the side.

"Took long enough to find you. For someone who doesn't like surprises, you sure don't keep a normal schedule," he complained, a grin plastered on his face.

I clung to him, my excitement overwhelming me. "Oh my God! I think I might love surprises like these!" He had obviously been in town for a little while. He was dressed in one of his three suits. He had not just come in from the field.

"How about ones like these?" He dropped to one knee, pulling the ring from his pocket. "I know I said I'd give you two weeks, but-"

"Yes. Of course I'll marry you." I put my hand in his and watched him slide the ring on. It was perfect. One raised stone amid a cluster, small, but pretty. "I love it," I told him, bending to kiss him. "But did you have to bring the rain with you?" I complained, looking up at the sky.

"Hey, be grateful, that rain closed down work early." He smirked. "Which is really good, because I ended up being asked for an interview today."

I had been admiring my new bauble as he stood. Now I looked up to him. "Interview?"

"Yes. I'm joining a construction crew in town. Little less money, but no trips. How does that sound?"

"Perfect." I murmured. I wrapped my hands around his neck and pulled him down for a kiss.

A/N Woot! I got to do a continuation. Awesome! :D See week 12: Waiting for the first proposal.

Burntcore's Week 14 Entry: Missing You

Title:
Missing you

I stared at the picture of Katie and me lying in the grass from last summer with my dog Bijou. I couldn’t believe it had been a year already. It seemed like it just happened yesterday… and now we were having a memorial service tonight to remember her by.

That day was like any other. Katie and I had spent the day together like we did all the time. It was late summer, only weeks before our senior year was supposed to start. We were so excited that we got lockers next to each other in the senior hallway. We spent the morning going through our closets and comparing our new clothes for school.

Our senior year… it was the one thing that we had looked forward to for years. This was it, the culmination of all the years of school, our final hoorah before we were cast out into the world as adults.

And now I stood here, officially an adult and a high school graduate, missing my best friend.

We were supposed to do this together.

Tears tracked down my face and I roughly brushed them aside with my hand. I didn’t want to start crying yet. Tonight would be bad enough.

Arms wrapped around my shoulder, making me jump until I realized it was just my mom. I sunk into her embrace gratefully.
“Shhh, baby girl. I know it’s rough,” my mother soothed, rubbing my shoulder. She looked down at the picture in my hand and smiled sadly.

“I remember taking that picture. You two had such fun that day.”

I could only nod. If I spoke, my voice would betray me, and I’d start crying in earnest.

“Still can’t believe she’s gone. Deanna hasn’t been the same,” she mused quietly. Deanna was Katie’s mom. Something broke within her that night when she learned her only child, her beautiful baby girl, had been killed.

“No one has,” I added in a whisper. No day had been the same. Katie was my best friend. How could anything ever be the same?

“Come on, sweetheart. We gotta get ready for the memorial,” my mom said as she steered me toward the house.

I didn’t respond but followed my mother inside the house.

In my bedroom, I looked at the outfit that was laid out on my bed. It was one of Katie’s outfits. It was one of the outfits that we had agreed to swap after we raided each others’ closets. She should’ve been the first person to wear this, not me.
Far too soon, my parents and I were climbing into the car and off to the memorial site, the high school football field. It was fitting, it was the location of her death.

The crowd at the field was huge. I grumbled under my breath at the sight. Katie was a fairly popular girl but there was no way all these people knew her. I supposed I should be happy at least that they were all here to help celebrate her life… and it would serve as a warning.

It was so unfair. Katie was too young to have her life taken from her. Why did it have to be my best friend?

We made our way to the field, walking through the small groups of people, each group holding the small white cloth balloons. They were a lot like hot air balloons but on a much smaller scale. Katie always wanted to go in one. This was our homage to her. As we walked, people would murmur soft things towards us or gently touch our arms as we passed. I didn’t want this attention. This wasn’t about me.

My parents pulled me to a stop as we approached the center of the gathering. Katie’s mom Deanna, and her father, Jon, stood on a small platform. There were a few small floral arrangements along the edge of the platform. Katie’s picture stood in the center, behind her parents, larger than life, smiling like she didn’t have a care in the world. The picture was from her senior photographs taken just a week before her death, for her senior year that she never got to experience. The school even granted her an honorary diploma that Deanna accepted at Graduation. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

We joined Katie’s parents on the platform and I tried to hide behind the adults. I wasn’t comfortable with this. I didn’t want to face this. Deanna looked back towards me with a small smile on her face.

“You came after all,” she murmured.

I stared at my feet. “I had to.” It wasn’t that I didn’t want to, although there was a part of me that didn’t, but I had to be here. I had to be here for Katie, for her parents, for my parents, but mostly for Katie.

Deanna nodded and pulled me into a rough hug.

“You were such a good friend to her, Eva. I will never forget what you meant to my little girl.”

I sniffed and tried not to cry.

“Shall we get started?” Jon asked quietly.

Deanna nodded and gently released me from the hug but clasped my hand to keep me close.

Jon turned on the microphone that was on a small stand nearby.

“Thank you everyone for coming tonight. We, Katie’s parents and I, appreciate it so much that all of you would take time out of your night and remember our little girl. She was such a light in our lives.”

Jon’s voice broke and he took a moment to collect himself.

“She was like any typical teenage girl. We had our rows, but overall, she was a good girl. She was smart, beautiful, and was a good friend.” He glanced at me with a small, watery smile.

“But she was too trusting and trusted the wrong person.” His face hardened as the anger of his daughter’s unnecessary death came to the surface.

“Let our pain serve as a warning. She didn’t have to die if we had been more vigilant. If we had just-“ Jon cut himself off as his emotions overtook him. His shoulders began shaking as he cried quietly.

Finding strength I didn’t know I had, I took the microphone from Jon’s hand and approached the huge gathering.

“Katie was my best friend. I miss her every second of every day. We were supposed to go to college together. Now I’m doing it on my own. And it was all because of him.“

I closed my eyes for a moment and tried to find my focus. Jon had stopped crying by this time but had his face buried in his wife’s neck as they comforted one another.

“I had my reservations about Paul myself, but I never thought it would lead to what happened. He had issues that no one realized he had. I never thought I’d see the guy who said he worshipped Katie push her off the bleachers in a jealous rage.”
My memories came back in full-force, bringing back the one night, the one moment I wished I could forget. I would never forget it seemed to go by so slowly and so fast all at the same time.

“I remember that night like it was yesterday. We were at cheerleading practice, getting ready for school to start and the first home game. Everyone who knew Paul, knew he was a little odd but he seemed harmless. No one knew how angry he could become.

“Katie and he had become friends last summer, closer than I realized, closer than I think she realized. He felt he had a claim on her, a stake, just because they were friends. But she had the audacity to want to spend time with me over him.”

The guilt I couldn’t quite get over enveloped me. I knew that I didn’t cause her death, but I couldn’t help but feel somewhat responsible. If she hadn’t chosen me over him, perhaps she’d still be alive.

“He flipped. They argued on the bleachers. I watched from the field, trying to figure out what was going on. He kept advancing on her, causing her to move farther and farther up the steps, until they were at the top. I should’ve screamed, I should’ve done something, but I didn’t.”

A sob threatened its way up my chest but I wasn’t ready to give in yet. Her story needed to be told. She needed to be remembered.

“I can only imagine that she refused him once again because suddenly he began gesturing wildly, and then… then… he p-p-pushed her.” I began stuttering as my emotions took over. “She flipped over the railing and f-fell. She fell to the ground and didn’t get back up. Paul hopped over the railing and fell too, but he got up…. Eventually.”

Sobs were heard across the field. I gritted my teeth and tried to force down my own sadness. This wasn’t all there was to Katie. There was so much more.

“But it is not how she died that she should be remembered. She lived every day to its fullest. Her life was so much more than her death.”

I couldn’t hold it in any longer and I burst into tears. My parents pulled me to them and held me as my body shuddered, wracked with a year’s worth of pain and loneliness.

Deanna took that moment and spoke, taking the microphone carefully from my grasp. She invited everyone to remember a moment of Katie’s life and release their balloons, letting the happy memories of Katie flood the heavens so we all could remember how she lived.

I heard the crowd murmuring as each group found something to say to one another quietly. A sense of peace came over me as the voices floated around the field. I couldn’t hear distinct stories but the love that was coming from everyone buoyed my aching spirit. Rubbing my eyes, I looked up and saw hundreds of balloons illuminating the night sky. Hundreds of memories of Katie.

“Katie, you finally made it up there. I miss you. I love you,” I whispered, sending my thoughts up with all the balloons, as I finally said goodbye to my best friend.

Bendingmirrors Week 14 Entry: At Last

Title:
At Last

I had held his note in my hand for so long that the edges had worn. Proof that he was feeling as anxious as I was. I hated that we had been on opposite sides of the country for months.

We had tried to be adult about our decisions to attend colleges that would put us thousands of miles apart. After all, the separation now should pay off later with good careers and the chance to start our lives together with a promising future. I kept telling myself that it was a small price to pay, but my heart refused to listen.

I had spent so much of the year studying hard, and working my ass off so that I could have this guilt free break over Christmas to catch up with Jasper and my family. I hadn’t expected that the time would crawl by. That each day would feel like a week, a week like a month, and a month like a year. By that reckoning it had been an eon since I had seen my Jazz, let alone kissed him.

The note, when it had arrived, had almost broken my heart. I knew that there were so many more words that he had wanted to say, but he had been just as unable to put them down on paper as I was. There was only one more hour to go until I saw him again. He was flying to me, and then we would have a whole day to ourselves before we’d have to jump in my tiny car and drive home to Forks. I had to admit that the idea of poor Jazz squashing his lanky frame into my teensy little car for the 3 hour drive home to our parents, although I’m sure he wouldn’t see it that way.

I prowled my small apartment, making last minute adjustments to knick-knacks and ensuring that all of my favorite candles were out and ready to be lit for the romantic atmosphere. I had planned this down to the last detail. He would come up to my door and I would have the perfect soundtrack playing, the perfect lighting, and everything smelled fresh and clean from my week-long rampage with cleaning supplies.

The second hand moved around my wall clock so slowly that I had to check the batteries. There’s no way that the time could be passing that slowly. I checked my watch, and found that the time was correct. I hopped up, and changed around some of the candles, liking the new pattern better than the last.

Checking and rechecking my outfit, I decided I didn’t have enough time to change anyway. I couldn’t stand still anymore, and my apartment was too small to contain me. Grabbing my keys I ran out the door and started to pace up and down the stairs. Which only managed to contain my excitement for a few minutes before I found that even that wasn’t enough.

Running down to the ground floor, I began a vigil from the front stoop. Watching every car, and pedestrian pass, I occupied myself with making up lives for them. Cyclists became circus performers, and people hurrying down the street their audience as I tried to keep my mind off the interminable wait.

When the cab entered my street, a good 20 minutes before I was expecting it, I leapt from my seat and raced across the street narrowly avoiding a car whose driver was paying less attention than I was. I heard the crash behind me, but ignored it, as I focused on the man who was extracting himself from the back seat. Once we had his possessions out on the sidewalk, and the cab had departed, I threw myself into his arms. Pressing my lips to his I barely noticed when he lifted me up to cradle against his chest. This was home.

Eons passed while our lips and hands became reacquainted. I couldn’t believe that he was finally here, finally with me. He slowly lowered me back down to the ground, and raising his eyes back to mine he drew breath, “when did it start raining Al?”

I looked back at the carnage I had wrought with my quick dash across the street, and laughed as I grabbed his hand to take him upstairs for the perfect welcome that I had prepared. I would explain to him later how I had prepared everything for him, even if I had blown weeks of preparation with one impulsive move, I was sure he would prefer it that way.

Title: Murder at the Pool

I walked into the room to start my shift. I hate cleaning the pool, but I know it's a necessary job. I turned the surrounding lights on, so that there was enough light in the room that I could see what I was doing. When something white caught my eye. I looked out into the pool and dropped my mop and bucket of water.

There in the water was a woman, wearing a white dress. I didn't know what to do, I panicked. I fumbled around my body, looking for my cell phone. I pulled it out and dialled 911.

“What's your emergency?” A woman said on the other end of the phone.

“Help, I'm at work, there's a woman in the pool. She's not moving,” I rambled.

“Is she breathing?” the woman asked.

“I don't know, she's still in the water.”

“Okay, don't move her, where are you?”

I told the woman the pools address, and she told me that an ambulance was on its way. She stayed with me on the phone until I heard the sirens coming from outside the building. I clicked off the conversation, after thanking the operator and hurried the paramedics in. They immediately jumped into the water and guided her to the side where I helped them bring her out of the water.

They preformed CPR on her straight away and asked me why I didn't jump in the water and try and save her.

“I can't swim well and I don't know CPR,” was my answer. I hadn't been working here long, and being able to swim well wasn't an requirement, because usually there's a cover on the pool at night to save the water.

The police arrived not long after and questioned me, asking me pretty much the same questions that the paramedics had asked previously. They took the woman's body away and told me that they'll be in contact if they need any more information.

I was escorted out of the building as the pool was now a crime scene, so I phoned my boss to tell him what had happened. He didn't answer the phone, and that was highly unusual because we spoke daily and his phone was always on.

I hung up the phone and tried again, with the same outcome. I found this strange so, I managed to catch the detective and tell him my findings. He asked me the boss's name, and I told him. He said that he'll check it out and get back to me.

All I can say, is thank god I told the detective about the non-answered phone call. My boss was the person who killed the woman. I still don't know her name, but I found out that my ex-boss killed her for some drug problem. Who'd have thought that the person the runs a highly regarded gym was hooked on cocaine and heroine.

The investigation lasted four months, and in that time, I had become very acquainted with the people down the precinct. So much so, that I met someone. She was perfect in every way. I asked her to marry six months after we started dating, and she happily accepted. We were married not 12 months later.

In some ways, I was glad that it took me finding someone dead in a pool to find the love of my life, but in other ways, I hated that it caused one person to die just to find my wife, my soul mate. Each year that passes of the accident, I visit the old gym, and rest flowers at the door; for remembrance. My wife supported me for everything we've ever been through, and I could never thank her enough.

PicPrompt 2 (Picture two)

Title: Captive

I love swings, I love the way the air goes through my hair, the way I can hear it whistling through my earrings. Also, just being on a swing, the speed, the way you feel... free. It's a memorizing experience. I know that sometimes, I may seem too old for swings, but I've found that you're never too old to 'get back on that old swing' as my 'dad' would say.

As I swung, I looked at the picture. I saw kids playing in the sand with their parents, the tide coming in, and just looking at it, made me crave what I was missing. The freedom, the swing makes me feel free but it doesn't do anything else for me than make a feel a certain way.

When in truth, I'm captive. I've never known freedom. I've never really felt the breeze go through my hair. I'm constantly stuck inside of this room, it's black, with 3 huge pictures that are shots that my captor took not long after he took me. All I want in this world is to find a god and for someone to save me.

I've never heard my own voice, I'm constantly gagged, I get food through an IV that is hooked up to certain points around the room. I've never seen my captor, he always has a mask on his face. I know its a he because he constantly talks to me. He has speakers put all around the room and talks to me a lot. Whether it's to tell me about the weather, although I don't know what a sun is or rain.

I have to believe everything he says, I don't know anything else apart from he tells me. If he says what I'm doing is swinging, then I believe him, if he tells me I'm ugly, then I'm ugly. Although, I don't know what ugly means.

I'd love to be able to feel the rain, the sun, and anything else there is out in the world. I just have no idea of how to get out there. I heard the door opening, and someone sat on the swing next to me. Sometimes, my captor likes to sit next to me and swing when I do. He says it's to “bring us together” or something.

Only today was different, they didn't talk to me straight away like normal, they just swung.

Then, I heard the most wonderful words, “I have to let you go.”

Emotions I didn't know that existed burst inside of me, and I couldn't wait.

“It's getting too risky, to let you stay, we could move, but I don't want to take the risk. I have to. I'll miss you,” he said and unlocked my arms from the chains and took my gag off. My mouth was free, and it felt really weird, I needed something to quench the weird sensation. I was handed a bottle of water and I just looked at it. I didn't know what to do. So my captor lifted it to my mouth and poured the drink into my waiting mouth.

I found out that my first ever oral drink was water. I loved the taste, it was different, but very pleasant. My captor took me out of the room for the first time and into what I later learnt as a motorcar. He dropped me off at a building that had a red cross on it and inside there were lots of people wearing white coats.

I never saw or heard from my captor again, I found my living family, I had a real mother and father. I didn't know how to act, I was quiet all the time and I never ate anything. It was awkward and then I was sent to a place where they take care of people who have been in situations like mine.

My life got back on track, and I felt the rain, and the sun on me, and I felt the wind blow through my hair.

I was finally happy.

Title:
The Ups and Downs of Life

I stood in the middle of the caravan park, just the fresh air around me was incredible, I had been stuck in the small van for a few hours, and already I felt suffocated. The fresh air was very welcome in my lungs and in the end I just stood there for a while.

People passed me talking quietly, muttering about something. I felt the stares, I even peeked out of my closed eyes to see people pointing at me. I clenched my eyes shut once I had enough of the pointing.

Why point at me? I was just enjoying the breeze in my hair and around me. Being stuck in a caravan isn't fun in the slightest. It brought back memories living in one, when times were rough. I worked in a bar, it was blue everywhere and I mean everywhere. It was also covered in what seemed to be ice, I never found out what it was though, and I worked there for six months.

For six months, I was tortured to put it lightly. I was given a uniform that covered nothing. I was groped, man-handled and asked for sex everynight. I hated it, all I wanted was to get out of the place. But in the end, I pesevered, and reported the place to Health and Safety because they didn't meet one regulation. It was sweet revenge. From that day on, I got my life sorted out, and I was no longer living life rough. I don't know what happened, but things seemed to brighten up.

Life was good, and all of that luck had brought me here, standing in the middle of the caravan park. Looking back now, I realise that I've always kind of had a good life. Sure, I've had a dark past, but what person doesn't? The world is full of light and dark, and it's all down the choices and decisions that we as people make. Or, mainly shit happens, and you're dealt with anything.

I don't know what I was dealt with, but I am grateful for it.

*

We spent another week in the caravan park, the family and I went to the beach, and I made sandcastles with my little brother, explored the rock pools, and ate a load of icecream.

Life was good, but it could be better, but I know that life can only improve in time.

Nostalgicmiss Week 13 Entry: Fate's Hand

Title:
Fate's Hand

. . . Continued . . .
NC-17: For Language.

I woke up in the embrace of Tate, his warm arms were curled around me, holding me close enough to feel the gentle thrum of his heart against my ear. We were tangled together in the sheets like we'd gravitated toward one another as we slept. I felt comfortable and satisfied in his arms. Like I was meant to be here. It felt natural.

The only problem was, right now I needed the bathroom.

I shifted my legs from under his as gently as I could without jostling the bed and waking him. The fine hairs that covered his legs tickled mine as I retracted them. He hummed gently under his breath as I escaped, his arm tightening around my waist possessively.

I paused. A smile forming on my lips as I watched him slip under the weight of sleep again. I wanted to lay there and watch him, feel his body as it rose and fell under my hands, but my stupid insistent bladder was making it impossible to lose myself in him.

It took me a second to loosen his grip on my waist. Every time I worked his hands free, he gripped me and pulled me closer again, his breathy sighs signifying the slight disturbance I had created.

Finally, my toes hit the floor and I managed to slide out in one swift motion. I walked toward the door, grabbing a t-shirt and pulling it over my head, all the while fighting the urge to look back at the man sleeping comfortably in my bed. Last night had been more amazing than I'd ever thought it could be. Sure, it had been a long time since I'd been with someone, but it had been so different with Tate, the need for him, the desire. It was like a living breathing animal clawing to get out, and the release had been more powerful than I thought I was capable of.

With a smile I slipped out of my bedroom and pulled the door closed behind me. Taking the deep breath I'd needed to take since I'd woken up. It wasn't until I heard the chirp of my phone in the living room that I noticed my purse strewn out across the floor. Had I really been that driven to get him into my room I hadn't noticed it slip from my grip?

As much as I wanted to see who had called, nature made me detour to the bathroom first.

The moment I had finished and washed my hands, I made my way to pick up the contents of my purse. i shoved everything inside and picked up my phone, waking it up to see who'd tried to call me.

I frowned.

Haden's name popped up with fourteen calls and six texts, starting from the moment we'd left the psychic's. Why had he been so desperate to get in touch with me?

I flipped open the top of my phone and scrolled through the texts, but none of them revealed what was so desperate. They only seemed to beg me to call him all the more. I went to voice mail, but all that uncovered was his desperate voice that grew into anger as the messages progressed.

Whatever he wanted, I knew I had to call him soon. The last call had only come in about twenty minutes prior. Sadly, I knew Tate's wake up call would have to wait.

Stepping into the bathroom again, I called Haden's number and held it to my ear, my foot tapping gently on the white tile as I perched on the edge of the tub. I just hoped this was as desperate as it seemed to be.

"Where the hell have you been?" Haden's voice said down the phone, his irritation evident.

"Asleep, jackass. Where you should have been. What's wrong with you?"

"What's wrong with me?" he snapped, his voice distorted with anger. "I've been trying to call you since we left last night."

"I was busy, Hade."

The silence on the other end of the phone was profound. I played with the edge of the t-shirt I was wearing, waiting for him to say anything.

"Meg, did you . . . Did Tate? Please, tell me you're alone."

"I'm in the bathroom, so yeah I'm a lone right now. And as for Tate, that's none of your business."

"It is my business, Megan. I made a big fucking mess of things and . . . I wish I knew how to say this."

"Say what?"

"My words, last night. They cleared something up for me."

"Haden will you spit it out?"

"My words, Meg. I always knew but I ignored it. When they came out it made so much sense to me."

"Still not answering my question," I sighed in frustration.

"Friends, choice, close and love, Meg. Those were my words. They answered every question I have been asking myself for the last few months."

My heart froze in my chest. His words, his words had made him question everything. Why did one trip to a stupid psychic change everything? How could one quirky night out have made everything so complicated?

"You know the stupid thing is I knew already. When I saw you and Tate in the truck, I knew, Meg. I knew I had fucked everything up. I've been in love with you for years, but seeing you with someone else, seeing you in a situation like that, it ripped my chest open."

"You selfish, bastard," I spat, my heart hammering in my chest. Six months ago this was all I ever wanted out of life. This was everything I had ever hoped for. I wanted Haden to notice me, I wanted him to realize what he was missing, but it never happened. Even last nights reading form Harmony had been confusing. I never expected Tate to have to fight for me, and I honestly believed she'd got my reading completely wrong, but this is what it had come down to.

"What? Megan, I just wanted to tell you that I . . ."

"No," I snapped, cutting him off. "Haden don't do this to me. You're with Ava, I'm with Tate. I've been pining over you since I was twelve years old and now that I'm happy you want to fuck with my life?"

"No, I don't want to fuck with your life, I'm in love with you, Megan. You, and only you . . ."

I felt the phone slip from my hand but there was nothing I could do to stop it. Gravity took control and I watched helplessly as it bounced against the toilet seat and splashed into the water at the bottom of the basin. The gem design winked at me from under the curve of the bowl but I was helpless to move.

Anger and pain crashed down around me. My ears buzzed with the impossibility of the situation. It was typical, selfish Haden. He saw someone with something he thought belonged to him and he staked a claim, but this time he was too late. I had put so much effort in moving on that I had succeeded.

I pushed up from the tub and wobbled on my legs, stumbling toward the door. I pulled it open and slipped through it, ignoring everything but the need to make it to my door. I fell into my room as quietly as I could, but Tate was already awake, sat on my bed with the stupid plastic dinosaur I had kept from when I met Haden. It was the thing he'd been playing with with my gum got suck in his hair.

I could tell he'd overheard part of my conversation. He was sat in his underwear looking torn. I needed his eyes to find mine. I needed him to see me so he would understand what I was feeling, what I was thinking.

"How much did you hear?" I asked, stepping further into the room.

"Not much," he shrugged. His eyes still on the stupid plastic toy.

"Look at me, Tate."

He didn't, his soulful eyes were trained on the dinosaur. I needed him to look at me so he would know what I was about to say was everything I was feeling. So he would know it was nothing but the truth.

I stepped into the space between his legs and placed my hands on his shoulders. "Please look at me."

I crouched in front of him and waited patiently as he seemed to fight himself on the decision. I begged for him to listen to me, I begged for the sky blue and amber to turn to me.

"Please," I whispered, one of my hands caressing his cheek gently.

It felt like a lifetime waiting for him to comply. Finally, after long agonizing minutes of wondering, his head turned, his eyes catching mine. I fell into the pools, the amber like gold leaf dancing around the inky black of his pupils. Sadness seemed to emanate from him as he drank me in.

"I understand," he said, his voice soft, but full of the pain he was trying to hide. "You loved him long before you met me."

"Yeah well," I sighed, cradling his other cheek with my free hand. "There's a slight complication with that theory."

"Megan," his voice was full of pleading but I needed him to let me finish.

"Tate, I'm in love with you. Every part of my heart and soul belongs to you. I thought I loved Haden, I can't lie to you about that. But it's nothing to how I feel about you. I thought this would be so difficult. When I met you that night in the woods, you were the only person to ever interest me enough to pull me away from him. I didn't know what that meant then, but I knew it meant something. Last night, when we talked about that stupid psychic and her words, I thought about the only choice I would ever have to make and I knew the answer. You never had to fight, Tate, because I was already yours. My choice was already made up in the hypothetical situation. I'm sorry you had to hear that conversation, and I'm sorry I never got to finish it, but I am telling you the truth. I love you, Tate."

"Dammit," he smiled gently, his hands now gripping my face. "And I thought is was my amazing talents in the sack would win you over."

"There's that too," I smirked, my tongue sweeping my bottom lip.

"I love you too, Meg. I thought it was too soon, I never for a second thought you felt the same way."

"Well, you were wrong."

I laughed and sprang to my feet, pushing him back on the bed with my body. My lips found his easily as his hands slid up my t-shirt, relieving me of it's burden.

I think that's it!!! Fini, the end for Megan and the gang ;)

Title:
Love Letters

Dear Jasper,

No.

Dearest Jasper,

Nooo.

Dearest,

... Seriously? God, why can't I do this?

Jasper,

There, that sounds better. More me.

Jasper,

I know this isn't really the best way to do this. But, you're asleep and I know if I see your eyes and smile I won't be able to leave.

Shit. He's going to think I'm breaking up with him. Fuck.

Jazzy,

I'm sorry to do this while you're asleep, but I love you too much to wake you up before I...

I am officially the worst writer ever.

Jazz,

Last night was... amazing. You were amazing. That thing you did with your tongue? Amazing. The food and the company... amazing. And in case you didn't pick up on it, the sex, AMAZING.

And I need to buy a thesaurus - or at least some of that Word of the Day toilet paper that I bought Emmett last year.

J,

I'll be back.

A.

Mary Alice Brandon. You are not the Terminator.

But fuck it, it'll do.
