Discovery

I thought, when having a child wasn’t as easy as simply having sex, that I didn’t really need a baby. My marriage was wonderful and a child would add to that, but could as easily upset the applecart that was our relationship.

I had nieces and a nephew, so it wasn’t as though I couldn’t get my baby fix.

None of that prepared me for Snowball. When Larry came home with a tiny, purring bundle of white, I fell in love again.

“Oh my God! She is so adorable.”

“She’s yours.”

I actually squealed. It’s not often a forty year-old woman squeals. Now I spend my weekend enjoying the spring air and watching Snowball explore the world outside the house. At the moment, that was the deck. Not exactly a jungle, but the tiny kitten seemed to treat it as one, stepping cautiously. She stopped following me and I turned to find out where she’d gone. The gate was closed, in case she decided to bolt, so I knew she couldn’t be far.

I chuckled upon seeing her still near the glass door we’d come through, staring intently at the deck boards.

Rather, she stared at what was walking on the boards. A ladybug, bright red against the pale board, crawled along. Snowball lifted her paw and ever so gently, reached out to touch the insect.

The ladybug, naturally, spread her wings and flew off. Snowball jumped back, almost all the way to the door. I couldn’t help but chuckle at her. She looked up at me and mewed, seeming unimpressed by my response.

“Oh, sweetie, did the little bug scare you?”

She mewed again and stepped cautiously forward again, placing each paw carefully.

“What will you do when you discover grass?” I asked, picking her up and taking her down the step.

Who says you need a child to see through the eyes of one?
