Title:
Underneath

I held my coffee, warming the palm of my hand as the morning chilled my breath. The rain was hitting the window I was staring out of. Today, I was going to go to the park with Kevin, but it looked like that was out. That’s okay, I wasn’t in the mood to go out anyway....at least that’s what I tried to convince myself. The phones were dead so I couldn’t get in touch with him. I’ll be spending this day alone with a good book. ...If only I hadn’t turned my book into the library yesterday. Damn.

I fell onto the couch, careful not to spill my almost empty coffee cup. Right as I was getting comfortable, I heard a knock on my door. Confused as to who it would be in this awful weather, I went to answer it.

There he was, soaked to the bone with a smile that lit up this gloomy day. Forgetting about the rain, I tackled him out onto my porch. “Kevin, did you walk here?!” I hugged him tightly, not wanting to let go.

He chuckled, pulling me inside. “Yeah, it wasn’t that far to walk. I do it all the time.”

“But not in the rain!” I was mad at him for being so stupid, but I couldn’t get over the happiness bubbling in my chest.

He knew I wasn’t really mad at him, so he just smiled. “Do you have a towel?”

Without thinking, I ran to the bathroom, dragging a towel behind me. “Hang on, I think I have some of my brother’s clothes here that he left behind.” I found some jeans and a shirt and shoved Kevin into the bathroom. “Gimme your wet clothes and I’ll throw them in the wash!” I called through the closed door.

In a few minutes, he came out holding a pile of dripping clothes. “Wet clothes are a lot harder to get off than I remember,” he chuckled, taking his clothes to the laundry room.

I grabbed a blanket off the back of the couch as lightning lit up the room. I felt cold from the weather outside, but warmed from the inside at the sight of Kevin. He came back in and hugged me, blanket and all. My arms were trapped in the thick quilt, so I pulled away and opened it to envelope him, too. He grabbed the corners of the blanket where my hands were and dragged me to the couch.

Lightning struck close by, rumbling the small house. Kevin pulled the blanket over our heads like we’d do as kids to hide from monsters. We laughed at our foolishness, but we were loving every minute we spent under here.

The storm seemed to be getting worse; it felt like the whole house would fly away in the heavy wind. We stayed silent, listening to the rain hit the roof. I felt him watching me so I returned his gaze with a smile.

His grin widened even more. “This is way better than a day in the park.”

I smiled in agreement, leaning forward to kiss him.
